Despite a premature Saru announcement declaring them champions, tournament rules leave a slim chance for New Zealand or Argentina. They need just one bonus point from their final match against New Zealand on 9 May.
The Junior Springboks secured comprehensive victories in the first two rounds of the 2026 U20 Rugby Championship at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha. They beat Argentina 48-21 and Australia 56-17, earning 10 points on the standings.
A South African Rugby Union (Saru) press release on Sunday evening declared them champions after the Australia win, stating: “The Junior Springboks clinched the 2026 Under-20 Rugby Championship in emphatic fashion on Sunday evening, overpowering Australia U20 56–17 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha to seal the title with a game to spare.” However, Sanzaar organisers applied a four-try bonus point system, reverting from recent years' rules. Saru amended their statement to say the team has “all but clinched” the title, with a spokesperson confirming the rules to Daily Maverick.
New Zealand sit on five points after a 34-29 bonus-point win over Australia and a 25-17 loss to Argentina, who also have five points. For New Zealand to win, they must beat South Africa on 9 May, score a bonus point, and deny the Junior Boks a losing bonus point, as head-to-head results supersede points difference.
Coach Kevin Foote praised the team's improvement. “There was a huge improvement... I think the whole squad showed what it means to play for SA. We showed grit, and I’m super proud of everyone,” he said. Captain Riley Norton added: “If you take your foot off the gas, a team like New Zealand will punish you.” The Junior Boks are on a nine-match winning streak dating back to the 2025 U20 World Championship.
