Mega Crit rejects microtransactions, outlines roadmap for Slay the Spire 2 early access

Following its blockbuster Steam early access launch that drew over half a million players, Slay the Spire 2 developers Mega Crit have ruled out microtransactions and small DLC packs. The studio detailed a flexible roadmap prioritizing content expansions and mod support.

Slay the Spire 2's early access version launched with five playable characters, three acts, and ten Ascension levels. Events like the Colossal Flower and relics such as the Lantern Key and Byrdonis Egg are available, building on the roguelite card battler core with new co-op elements.

In an interview with Destructoid, Mega Crit co-founder Casey Yano affirmed the team's strong opposition to microtransactions: "We're microtransaction haters." Despite fan interest in cosmetics, the developers plan to avoid small DLCs offering bonuses or cosmetics. Yano also reflected on balance from the original: "Is STS1 really that balanced though?"

The early access period is expected to last one to two years, mirroring the first game, with plans for up to 20 Ascension levels and hints of Act 4 featuring the Architect boss. A new character was teased in the trailer, but not The Watcher from STS1. Modding is a priority, with improved resources and easier tools for creators, though no dedicated mod tool yet.

Yano described a measured update strategy: "Hopefully pure content... If we update too often or make too many aggressive balance changes, progress and accomplishments may feel less impactful." This ensures player achievements remain meaningful en route to version 1.0.
