Nelly wins $67,000 from lawyer over country grammar lawsuit

A federal judge has ordered a lawyer to pay Nelly more than $67,000 in legal fees after a lawsuit over his debut album was dismissed as frivolous.

A federal judge ruled on May 28 that Precious Felder Gates must reimburse Nelly $67,586 for legal costs incurred defending against a lawsuit filed by former St. Lunatics member Ali Jones. The case, brought in 2024, claimed Nelly had cut his bandmates out of credits and royalties for the album Country Grammar but was dropped in April 2025 after Nelly's lawyers showed it fell outside the Copyright Act's three-year statute of limitations.
