Agriculture ministry urges public caution on meat during Eid

Ethiopia's Ministry of Agriculture has urged the public to exercise caution when consuming meat and offal products during Eid al-Adha. Desk head Ato Asmelash Berhe noted that the quantity reaching markets is low compared to production. He highlighted quality issues during peak slaughter periods.

Addis Ababa, Miyazya 1, 2018 (EFEMSI) – Ethiopia's Ministry of Agriculture has called on the public to take precautions with meat and offal quality during Eid al-Adha, when many animals are slaughtered.

Ato Asmelash Berhe, head of the Meat and Livestock Development Desk, stated that the country produces millions of quintals of goat, sheep, and poultry meat annually. However, the share reaching markets is low in quality and quantity, causing price drops and supply gaps. He emphasized meat and offal's role in the economy, jobs, cultural services, and foreign exchange earnings.

Recommendations include slaughtering healthy animals, cleaning sites, properly draining blood, preserving carcass shape, natural hanging, avoiding chopping or burning skin, preventing soil contamination, and not soaking or dragging on the ground.

In the 2017 budget year, 27 billion birr worth of raw meat and offal was produced, entering the economy swiftly with quality controls. The public is urged to apply these measures to maximize benefits from meat and offal.
