A Russian cargo ship named Adler, owned by a sanctioned company, has suffered an engine failure and anchored in Swedish waters north of Höganäs in Skåne. The vessel was heading north through the Öresund when the issue occurred during the night to Saturday. Authorities have been notified, and the Coast Guard is keeping it under observation.
A Russian-flagged cargo ship, Adler, has anchored off the coast of Höganäs in Skåne following an engine failure. The vessel is owned by M Leasing LLC, which is sanctioned by both the EU and the US. The sanctions stem from suspicions that the company transported North Korean ammunition to Russia for use in the war against Ukraine. According to Ukrainian intelligence, Adler also carried Russian missiles to China in 2018.
The ship departed from Bronka port near St. Petersburg four days ago, with an unknown destination. It was heading north through the Öresund during the night to Saturday when it issued a distress call about mechanical issues to Swedish authorities. It then anchored off the Kullahalvön peninsula, north of Höganäs.
"There is not much we can do if they have engine problems, but we have notified all authorities," says Marco Svensson, head of the Swedish Maritime Administration's surveillance center, to Helsingborgs Dagblad and Sydsvenskan.
Fredrik Strömbäck, press officer at the Swedish Maritime Administration, confirms: "They have engine problems and have had to anchor."
The Coast Guard is aware of the situation. "We are aware that the ship is where it is. We cannot say more at this time," states spokesperson Valdemar Lindekrantz to Helsingborgs Dagblad.
Svensson notes that such incidents are not "very common." The event has drawn attention due to the ship's sanctioned background, but no immediate security risks have been reported.
