母親たちは、待ち合わせの前後数日間は移動距離を伸ばし、隣接する縄張りに入り込んでから元の場所に戻っていた。こうした動きは果実の有無とは無関係に行われており、母親自身の採餌時間が減少していたことから、自らの負担を顧みない意図的な行動であることが示唆される。

研究チームは、「今回の研究は、野生のボルネオオランウータンの母親が、子供の社会的な遊びの機会を増やすために自身の行動範囲を調整しているという強力な証拠を提供するものだ」と記している。専門家は、今回の発見はオランウータンの手厚い育児や高い認知能力と合致するものであると指摘しているが、その調整の正確なメカニズムは依然として解明されていない。
