WhatsAppは、電話番号を共有せずにユーザー同士が繋がれるユーザーネーム機能を導入する。Meta傘下の同アプリを利用する30億人のユーザーを対象に、今週から予約受付が開始される。
WhatsAppは、プライバシー保護のオプション機能として、年内にユーザーネームを導入する予定である。ユーザーは今週から、「設定」＞「アカウント」＞「ユーザーネーム」メニュー、またはアプリ内の生成ツールを通じて、固有のユーザーネームを予約できるようになる。
この変更により、新規の連絡先や企業に対して、初回のやり取りで電話番号が表示されなくなる。また、最初は4桁の数字、将来的には英数字によるオプションのキーを設定することで、さらなる保護が可能となる。
予約受付は世界各国で順次拡大され、各国の機能開始時に通知が送られる。組織やクリエイターは、InstagramやFacebookと同一のユーザーネームを確保することも可能である。
今回のアップデートは、2024年に電話番号を非表示にするユーザーネーム機能を導入したSignalに続く動きとなる。
