Arsenal have shown interest in signing Inter Milan's young striker Pio Esposito following his impressive performance against them in the Champions League. Manager Mikel Arteta instructed sporting director Andrea Berta to inquire about the 20-year-old's availability, but Inter Milan firmly rejected any approach. Esposito, who came off the bench in Inter's 3-1 victory over Arsenal in January, has since scored seven goals for the Italian club this season.
In January, during the Champions League league phase at the San Siro, Arsenal suffered a 3-1 defeat to Inter Milan. Pio Esposito, a 20-year-old Italian international standing at 6ft 3in, entered the match as a substitute in the 63rd minute, replacing Lautaro Martinez. His performance reportedly 'frightened and fascinated' Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, prompting the substitution of Gabriel Magalhaes to help contain the towering forward.
Following the game, Arteta directed sporting director Andrea Berta to contact Inter's Piero Ausilio for information on Esposito's potential transfer and cost. Inter responded immediately, stating that Esposito is a central part of their future plans and is not available for sale at any price. The club emphasized there is 'no chance' of a deal, despite Arsenal's interest.
Esposito joined Inter's academy in 2014 and impressed on loan at Serie B side Spezia last season, scoring 17 league goals. Recalled to the first team in the summer, he has netted seven goals this season and established himself as a favorite under coach Cristian Chivu, even without being a regular starter. Chivu praised Esposito, saying: 'It’s the merit of a boy who wants to prove himself. He wants to put himself on the line and take responsibility like everyone else.'
Arsenal, who lead the Premier League, bolstered their attack last summer with Viktor Gyokeres for £64 million; the Swedish striker has scored 15 goals in 37 appearances. However, with Gabriel Jesus expected to leave at season's end, the club seeks further depth. Esposito's contract runs until 2030 on a salary of around €1 million per season (£800,000). Reports indicate he aims to secure a spot at Inter, especially with Martinez currently injured.
Inter view Esposito as a long-term asset, having tied him down before the season. While Arsenal may test Inter's resolve with a summer bid, the Italian club has made their stance clear.
