Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi submitted a note of dissent on Tuesday after a high-level meeting to select the next CBI director. He described the process as biased and said the opposition leader is not a rubber stamp.
The three-member selection committee met at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg on Tuesday evening. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Rahul Gandhi discussed candidates to succeed Praveen Sood, whose extended tenure ends on May 24.
Gandhi said he was not given 360-degree reports on the candidates and was expected to review records of 69 officers only during the meeting. In his dissent note he wrote, "The Leader of Opposition is not a rubber stamp. I cannot abdicate my constitutional duty by participating in this biased exercise."
He also accused the government of misusing the CBI against opponents. Names under consideration include Parag Jain, Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor and Sadanand Date. No final name has been announced.
