Two women sentenced to 25 years for extortion using fake COFEPRIS identities

The Mexico City Attorney General's Office secured a conviction against Brenda ‘N’ and María ‘N’ for impersonating COFEPRIS inspectors and extorting a merchant.

The two women were found guilty of aggravated extortion committed as a group. Each received a 25-year prison sentence and a fine of 565,700 pesos.

The events took place on 22 April 2025 at a food sales establishment in the Iztacalco borough. The convicted women used fake vests and identifications to threaten closure and demand 25,000 pesos.

The owner alerted the Secretariat of Citizen Security. Officers noticed the forged identifications and arrested the women. Prosecutors presented evidence that led to the conviction.

Authorities have reminded the public that COFEPRIS inspectors must show official identification and that payments outside established channels should not be accepted.
