Western Cape SPCA prepares for level 8 weather warning

The Western Cape SPCA is on high alert as an Orange Level 8 weather warning takes effect from Sunday until Tuesday, prompting preparations to assist animals at risk of flooding.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in the Western Cape has mobilised its first responders. Vehicles are being loaded with animal carriers, blankets, food and emergency supplies.

Spokesperson Belinda Abraham said the organisation is working closely with disaster management teams. It will respond from the Joint Operations Centre if flooding worsens.

“We do need every Capetonian to take the weather warnings seriously,” Abraham said. She urged residents to bring animals inside, ensure kennels are waterproof and raised, and move horses or farm animals to higher ground if flooding becomes imminent. The South African Weather Service issued the warning for disruptive rain across the Western Cape, valid from 10 to 12 May 2026.
