Complainant in JK report denies specific interests

Gerakan Angkatan Muda Kristen Indonesia (GAMKI) lawyer Saddan Sitorus affirmed that the report against Jusuf Kalla over his University of Gadjah Mada (UGM) speech is not driven by specific interests and continues at Polda Metro Jaya. The statement addresses claims of ulterior motives behind the complaint. Saddan stressed efforts to uphold legal equality for all religions.

Saddan Sitorus expressed respect for Jusuf Kalla's clarification on his contributions to resolving conflicts in various regions. However, he said it does not address the report's substance.

"We respect Mr. Jusuf Kalla's clarification, especially regarding his contributions in resolving conflicts in several areas. However, his clarification does not relate to the substance we question. So the report continues," Saddan told reporters in Jakarta on Friday, April 24, 2026.

The complaint aims to end one-sided labeling of religions in public spaces and affirm equal citizen rights. Saddan highlighted three key aspects: equal law enforcement for alleged religious crimes, security of beliefs, and public education on tolerance as a legal duty.

"What we push for is equality. This is not about who is stronger, but how the law treats all citizens fairly," he added.

The report is backed by about 20 Islamic and Christian community organizations objecting to JK's speech deemed offensive to Christianity. Saddan dismissed group interest claims as speculation diverting from the case's substance.
