Dragon quest i & ii hd-2d remake launches and is steam deck playable

Square Enix has released the DRAGON QUEST I & II HD-2D Remake, combining full remakes of the classic games. The title is rated playable on Steam Deck and compatible with SteamOS. It serves as the conclusion to the Erdrick Trilogy, following DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake from November 2024.

On October 30, 2025, Square Enix launched DRAGON QUEST I & II HD-2D Remake, offering upgraded HD-2D graphics, never-before-seen story content, and gameplay updates. The remakes chronologically follow DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake, which debuted in November 2024, completing the Erdrick Trilogy with two standalone epic adventures.

Key enhancements include a new fully explorable underwater world and a playable character in DRAGON QUEST II, among other additions. For Linux and SteamOS users, the game performs well on Steam Deck, earning a Playable rating from Valve and SteamOS compatibility.

Testing on Proton 10 shows that most features work smoothly, though some issues persist: small text readability, a required internet connection for the initial run, and no default support for external controllers—users may need to adjust via the SteamOS Quick Access menu. Otherwise, the game is ready for play.

In related developments, DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined is slated for release next year and has already received a Steam Deck Playable rating. The new remake is available on platforms including Steam and the Humble Store.
