The Pittsburgh Steelers chose Notre Dame defensive tackle Gabriel Rubio with the 210th overall pick in the sixth round of the 2026 NFL Draft. The pick, acquired in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs, adds size to a crowded defensive line room. Coaches praised Rubio's fit for the team's 3-4 defense.
Pittsburgh selected Rubio on April 25 after scouts spotted his imposing frame on Notre Dame film. Standing at 6-foot-5 and 321 pounds with 33 5/8-inch arms, Rubio fits the prototype of a Steelers defensive lineman. Head coach Mike McCarthy called the choice a 'no-brainer,' saying, “Number one, you watch the way he plays, and you look at his skillset, he’s a Pittsburgh Steeler defensive lineman. I think he’s an outstanding fit for the 3-4 [defense].” Defensive coordinator Patrick Graham credited the scouting staff, noting, “When you watch the ND tape... you’re like, ‘Who’s this big, tall guy right here?’” Scouts had attended practices and games to evaluate him despite his absence from the Combine. Rubio recorded 66 tackles, seven for loss, three pass deflections, and 1.5 sacks over 39 college games. His 2025 season ended early due to an arm injury after six games, but he showed run-stopping ability with seven tackles for loss in his career. A four-star high school recruit from St. Louis, Missouri, Rubio joins a defensive line featuring Cam Heyward, Keeanu Benton, Derrick Harmon, Yahya Black, and Sebastian Joseph-Day. The selection carries family ties: Rubio's father, Angel, was a seventh-round pick by the Steelers in 1998. While Rubio faces competition for a roster spot as a Day 3 pick, his size and nose tackle potential could earn him depth role in the 3-4 scheme.
