The Atin Ito coalition's fourth civilian mission to Pag-asa Island in the West Philippine Sea begins today to assert the Philippines' sovereignty amid ongoing Chinese incursions. Over 200 participants, including lawmakers, media, and fisherfolk leaders, will board the MV Kapitan Felix Oca from Manila's port.
The mission, themed “Balik-Pag-asa,” runs from April 30 to May 5, building on three prior civilian-led efforts to promote peaceful presence and support for local communities. The send-off ceremony features the Philippine National Anthem, a prayer led by Fr. Allan Bonloc of Project Paghilom, solidarity messages, and a horn salute from the ship. Akbayan representatives Chel Diokno, Perci Cendaña, and Dadah Kiram Ismula will join, along with former congressman Erin Tañada of the Mamamayang Liberal party-list.
Key activities include a “Patriotic Jetski Flag Ride” near Pag-asa Island led by Ismula and youth volunteers waving Philippine flags, and the first-ever island concert by Filipino rap group Morobeats. Volunteers will distribute essential supplies like fuel and logistical aid to residents.
Atin Ito mission commander and Akbayan president Rafaela David stated the fourth mission “reflects the growing and sustained nature of civilian participation in West Philippine Sea advocacy.” Separately, Filipino and American troops conducted a live-fire air defense exercise in San Antonio, Zambales, as part of Balikatan drills.
