Centre considers bifurcating urban ministry for dedicated Delhi department

The government is weighing a plan to split the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs into two units, one focused only on Delhi and the National Capital Region. Each would have its own secretary to streamline oversight.

The proposal would upgrade the existing Delhi division into a full department. It could cover the National Capital Region along with the Central Vista redevelopment project.

Officials say the change is meant to improve coordination among the many agencies that manage the capital. The timing follows the BJP's return to power in Delhi after nearly three decades.

Additional Secretary D Thara, a 1995-batch IAS officer, continues to handle key projects including Central Vista and the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation. Current ministry secretary Srinivas Katikithala oversees the broader portfolio.

The ministry has been split before, most notably in 1995, before later mergers brought it to its present structure in 2017. A senior official noted that urban development in Delhi remains a dynamic field due to population growth and rapid urbanisation.
