Chinese researchers achieve breakthrough in space solar power technology

Chinese researchers have successfully tested a system capable of beaming energy to multiple moving targets at once, marking another step toward an orbiting power station.

The research team built a 75-metre tower at Xidian University in Xi'an to test the full energy transmission process. Led by senior engineer Duan Baoyan, the team completed a full-chain ground verification platform in 2022.

Tests showed the system transmitted 1,180 watts across about 100 metres while maintaining precise microwave beam control. A drone received 143 watts of wireless power while flying at 30km/h from roughly 30 metres away.

The overall wireless power transmission efficiency reached 20.8 per cent. Researchers said the technology could act like a 'microwave charging station' in space, reducing satellites' reliance on onboard solar panels.

A team from Xidian University has developed a car-mounted microwave wireless power system that kept fixed-wing drones airborne for up to 3.1 hours. The system uses GPS positioning, dynamic tracking, and onboard flight controls to maintain alignment between the emitter and drone during flight. The findings were published on March 25 in the peer-reviewed journal Aeronautical Science & Technology.

China General Nuclear Power Group announced on Monday the start of construction for a 50 MW trough-based concentrated solar power plant at 4,550 meters altitude in Damxung County, Xizang Autonomous Region. The facility, located near Lhasa, integrates a 400 MW photovoltaic system and is set for full operation by 2027. Xinhua reported preparatory digging began that day amid efforts to diversify power sources.

China has activated the world’s largest superconducting magnet as part of its CRAFT nuclear fusion project, establishing a new benchmark for clean energy research.

China is testing a prototype nuclear reactor that can be carried on a truck and generate up to 10 megawatts of energy, enough to power a medium-sized AI data centre, a leading scientist said. The reactor, in development for several years, is described as the “world’s first 10-megawatt vehicle-mounted nuclear power unit”.
