Christos Nikou mentors young directors at Karlovy Vary

Greek filmmaker Christos Nikou served as mentor to ten young European directors in the Future Frames program at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival this week. He shared insights on finding an authentic voice and creating tender cinema during a discussion attended by Variety.

Nikou, known for directing Apples and Fingernails, stressed the value of unique tone and identity that emerges from personal passion. He told participants that many filmmakers chase funding and festival trends instead of stories close to their hearts.

The director, who is self-taught and watches three films daily, advised against self-centered work. He called for cinema that balances audience awareness with authenticity and avoids pretension.

Nikou also discussed practical challenges, including budget differences between Europe and North America. He noted that his $250,000 budget for Apples contrasted with the $10 million to $12 million for Fingernails due to union requirements.

He further shared that awards hold little meaning and urged the young filmmakers to enjoy the creative journey regardless of recognition.
