FBI arrests Florida man over Steam malware theft

The FBI has arrested a 21-year-old Florida man accused of stealing about $220,000 in cryptocurrency through malware hidden in games on Steam. The operation allegedly ran for two years with several co-conspirators. Eight games were used to infect users' computers and access their wallets.

According to the indictment, the suspect and his peers added malware to games including Lunara, PirateFi, BlockBlasters, and Lampy. When players downloaded the titles, the software scraped passwords from their PCs. The stolen credentials were then used to drain cryptocurrency wallets.

The group promoted the infected games on social media and used bots to target users with large crypto holdings. Investigators traced stolen Bitcoin to gift cards spent mostly on Uber Eats orders.

The games were removed from Steam earlier this year after the FBI announced its investigation into malware distribution on the platform.
