German NATO soldiers attacked in the Netherlands

Unknown assailants verbally and physically attacked two German soldiers from the operational NATO headquarters in Brunssum. The attackers chanted slogans against NATO.

The two Bundeswehr members were in civilian clothes on Monday evening in a wooded area near the base. A group of eight to ten masked men first stopped a bodyguard, demanded money and then chanted the slogan "We hate Nato".

The soldier freed himself and alerted the Dutch police. When officers arrived, the same group attacked a second staff soldier and kicked the man lying on the ground.

The attackers fled without any arrests being made. NATO had previously raised the security level to "Bravo" after airstrikes against Iran began. German General Ingo Gerhartz warned the soldiers to be vigilant during a briefing on Tuesday.
