Indonesia's music world mourns the passing of senior vocalist and radio broadcaster Iwan Zen on Wednesday, November 19, 2025. The sad news was first shared by musician Tohpati on Instagram. Many fellow musicians remember his extensive contributions to the entertainment industry.
Iwan Zen, full name Mochammad Ridhwan Lefty Zen, was born in Bandung, West Java, on January 22, 1969. He grew up in an artistic family, with his sister Lita Zen being a popular 90s singer. His professional career began around 1994 as a pop singer, gaining fame after performing 'Impian Cinta' with Uchy Amyrtha.
Beyond singing, Iwan was known for commercial jingles. In 1997, he collaborated with Uci Nurul and GEQ Production House, becoming a key figure behind the creative industry scenes. He also worked as a radio broadcaster and joined the band Halmahera, which featured modern ethnic music. His involvement started around 1996, including jamming with Tohpati. Iwan released the album 'Oh Asmara' in 1994.
The news of his death was first announced by Tohpati on Instagram on November 20, 2025. 'Innalillahi wa innailaihi rojiun. Selamat jalan temanku, Iwan Zen. Semoga Iwan damai di sisi Tuhan. Senang sudah pernah bermusik bersama di Halmahera band di tahun 1996,' he wrote. Barry Likumahuwa recalled, 'Turut berbela rasa, ya, mas (Tohpati) dan mas Indro Bass. Lagu Halmahera 'Khayalanku' bahan kulikan ku dulu awal-awal belajar bass.' Andien and Dewa Budjana also expressed, 'Turut berduka, mas' and 'Turut berduka, ya.'
His body was laid to rest in Bandung, leaving a legacy for musicians and loyal listeners.
