Keith Pelley, president and CEO of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, spoke on Monday after the Toronto Maple Leafs fired GM Brad Treliving. Pelley called the upcoming GM hire “the most important decision that I will likely make in my tenure at MLSE.” He made clear he would not pursue a rebuild and would avoid candidates proposing one, stating, “I’m not here to be a scout, not here to be a coach. I’m not here to be a general manager.” Instead, he plans to engage a search firm to identify a suitable leader for hockey operations, though none has been selected yet. The team has five assistant GMs and five pro scouts, yet Pelley noted few within the organization anticipated the recent progress of the Montreal Canadiens and Buffalo Sabres, pointing to a cultural shortfall in competitiveness. He affirmed the Maple Leafs possess the “foundational pieces” to contend and wants a new GM who is data-centric. Pelley stressed accountability and a thorough hiring process, promising autonomy to the incoming executive on decisions involving head coach Craig Berube and roster construction. Those choices will rest with hockey personnel, not MLSE leadership.
