Lars Ulrich inspired by U2 Sphere residency

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich described U2's opening night at the Sphere in Las Vegas as a groundbreaking experience that expanded his view of live performances.

Ulrich shared his reactions during an appearance on SiriusXM's "Close To The Edge" show with U2 guitarist The Edge. He called the event "fucking awestruck, inspired, energized" and noted it opened "another frontier" for concerts.

Metallica plans its own residency at the venue later this year. The Life Burns Faster series starts with dates in October 2026 and runs through March 2027, expanded from eight to 24 nights due to fan demand.

Ulrich acknowledged the challenge ahead, saying the production feels "overwhelming and fucking intimidating" yet exciting. He added that stepping outside the band's usual controlled environment could prove valuable.

The Sphere has hosted other major acts including The Eagles, with prior residencies by Phish, Dead & Company, No Doubt, Kenny Chesney, The Zac Brown Band, and The Backstreet Boys.
