New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced that pitcher Luis Gil will return to the starting rotation next Friday against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. Gil is set to make a minor league start on Sunday for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre at Rochester before slotting in behind Ryan Weathers. The move comes as the Yankees transition from an early-season four-man rotation.
The Yankees began the season with a compact four-man rotation of Max Fried, Cam Schlittler, Will Warren and Ryan Weathers, taking advantage of early off-days. Boone revealed the plans ahead of New York's Saturday night game against the Miami Marlins. Gil, who posted a 4.66 ERA over 19 1/3 innings this spring, will follow Weathers in the order on regular rest, aligning with the team's first visit to Tropicana Field since July 2024. The Rays' home stadium was damaged by Hurricane Milton in October 2024, leading them to play 2025 games at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa instead. Gil returns after a 2025 season limited to 11 starts due to injury. He aims to surpass his 2024 performance, when the right-hander went 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA in 29 starts to earn American League Rookie of the Year honors.
