Munich mayor Reiter uses N-word in city council

Munich's mayor Dieter Reiter used the N-word during a city council session, drawing criticism. He apologized, attributing it to a quote from a cabaret piece. This occurs just before local elections where he seeks a third term.

During a Munich city council session on Wednesday, Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) used the N-word, a racist term for Black people. While flipping through documents, he said: „So, wo samma, sagen die ...“, as shown in the recording. The podcast "Hallo München" had previously reported on the incident.

The cabaret artist Alfred Raimund "Fredl" Fesl (1947-2024) was active in Lower Bavaria.

He referenced the city council's 2022 resolution classifying and banning the N-word as racist: "Dieser Haltung schließe ich mich selbstverständlich an.

The remark is not the only point of criticism ahead of Sunday's local elections. Reiter admitted receiving 20,000 euros annually since late 2021 for his honorary role on FC Bayern's advisory board, initially unpaid. "Dass dadurch eine Genehmigung des Stadtrats notwendig gewesen wäre, war mir nicht bewusst," he said. In February, he succeeded Edmund Stoiber on the supervisory board.

Opposition groups like Die Linke and Die Partei view it as a violation of civil servant law due to lack of council consultation. He arranged for a legal review and promised to inform the council. Polls show Reiter leading against the Greens and CSU.
