NTSA explica por que as placas de tuk-tuk começam com KTW

A Autoridade Nacional de Transporte e Segurança (NTSA) atribui o prefixo KTW às placas de matrícula dos tuk-tuks para distingui-los de outros veículos e coibir roubos. Os tuk-tuks são classificados na categoria de motocicletas de três rodas, sendo que K significa Kenya (Quênia), T significa Three (Três) e W significa Wheels (Rodas).

A Autoridade Nacional de Transporte e Segurança (NTSA) introduziu as sequências de quatro letras, como KTWA ou KTWB, para preservar a integridade das placas e resolver os casos de roubo em que as placas eram trocadas entre tuk-tuks, motocicletas ou carros. Essa abordagem também prolonga a vida útil da série padrão de registro de veículos do Quênia. As cores das placas têm significados específicos: a traseira amarela e a frente branca com letras pretas marcam os tuk-tuks comerciais padrão para transporte público. As placas verdes, geralmente com o prefixo KD, servem para fins de garagem, como o transporte de novos tuk-tuks de showrooms para clientes ou para test drives. De acordo com uma política de 2026, essas placas verdes também identificam os tuk-tuks elétricos para o status de emissão zero.
