Philippines and New Zealand mark 60 years of diplomatic ties

The Philippines and New Zealand are celebrating 60 years of formal diplomatic relations, with over 108,000 Filipinos now living in New Zealand and serving as key connectors between the two nations.

Philippine Ambassador to New Zealand Kira Christianne D. Azucena highlighted the human element of the relationship in a recent interview. She noted that the ties have grown beyond treaties into shared migration, education, and cultural connections, particularly with Māori communities. The ambassador pointed to a 2024 visit by New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to Manila. This led both governments to agree on elevating the relationship to a comprehensive partnership focused on areas like agriculture, maritime security, sustainability, and education. More than 108,000 Filipinos reside in New Zealand, many as dual citizens. Azucena described them as agents of progress who maintain strong ties to their homeland while contributing to their new communities. Azucena stressed the role of dialogue in resolving conflicts and the importance of young people in bringing innovative approaches to diplomacy.
