Indonesia's Public Works Ministry is planning 1,000 temporary housing units for residents along railway tracks, particularly in Jakarta's Senen and Tanah Abang areas. The initiative follows President Prabowo Subianto's inspection on March 26, 2026. Minister Dody Hanggodo said designs will be modular and adapted to available land.
President Prabowo Subianto ordered the construction of decent housing and MCK facilities for Senen railway track residents after inspecting the area on Thursday, March 26, 2026. Residents have lived there for decades in limited conditions, according to Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.
The directive involves Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo, Housing Minister Maruarar Sirait, Perum Perumnas, and PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI). On Friday, March 28, 2026, Hanggodo stated at Rest Area KM 379 Batang-Semarang, Central Java, that the 1,000-unit huntara plan is under inter-ministerial discussion, including the State Secretariat Ministry, Cabinet Secretariat, and Directorate General of Railways.
"The plan is to build temporary housing, around a thousand houses. We've been discussing it with related ministries, the State Secretary Minister, Cabinet Secretary, and the land owner, the Railway Director General," Hanggodo said.
Land details, including size and shape, are still being reviewed, possibly with KAI on Monday. A potential site is around Tanah Abang, about three hectares. Huntara designs will be modular; if land is limited, built vertically up to 3-4 floors like in IKN. The ministry is also continuing huntara projects elsewhere, such as Aceh.
