94 percent of Pinoys demand more bike lanes

A Pulse Asia survey found that 94 percent of Filipinos want more investment in bike lanes and pedestrian walkways. The findings add pressure on lawmakers to raise the active transport budget to at least P1 billion for 2027.

The survey, conducted in May, showed strong public support for active transport. It found that 93 percent of respondents favor expanding dedicated public transport lanes like the EDSA busway. Another 82 percent called for higher transport subsidies.

Mobility Awards national coordinator Amber Garma urged policymakers to treat the results as a mandate. She asked President Marcos to declare active transport an economic priority in his State of the Nation Address and called on Congress to set a minimum P1 billion budget for 2027.

Garma noted that funding has fallen sharply from P2 billion in 2022 to P105.38 million in 2026. The Department of Transportation is seeking up to P1 billion for next year. The government aims to build a 2,400-kilometer bike lane network but has completed only 1,100 kilometers so far.
