Amanda Morgan waives hearing in ongoing son's strangulation death case

In an update to the neglect case, Amanda Morgan waived her preliminary hearing in Mobile County court, sending charges of felony murder and aggravated child abuse to a grand jury. Her 14-year-old autistic son died from accidental strangulation in October 2025 while left home alone.

Amanda Morgan, 39, of Theodore, Alabama, appeared in Mobile County court on April 20, 2026, and waived her right to a preliminary hearing. The case now advances to a grand jury for indictment decisions on felony murder and aggravated child abuse charges stemming from her son's October 8, 2025, death. She remains in Mobile County Jail on a reduced $20,000 bond, with no next court date set.

District Attorney Keith Blackwood addressed reporters post-hearing, reiterating that the boy accidentally strangled himself with a blanket tied as a cape—a self-soothing behavior—after being left unsupervised. He stressed to WKRG that prosecutors allege prolonged neglect, not that Morgan directly killed her son. This follows her March arrest after police found severe home neglect: insect infestation, human waste, no running water or AC. Witnesses confirmed she left her autistic teens (14 and 16) alone overnight and longer; her daughter was hospitalized for malnutrition. Morgan is barred from contacting her surviving child.
