Hytale leader reflects on challenging early access launch

Simon Collins-Laflamme, co-founder of Hypixel Studios, described Hytale's recent early access release as the most challenging yet rewarding experience of his life. After reclaiming the project from Riot Games, the Minecraft-like game launched last week following years of development and setbacks. Collins-Laflamme expressed gratitude to the community and his team for their support.

Hytale's journey began in 2015 when development started under Hypixel Studios, quickly attracting attention for its Minecraft-inspired features. In 2020, Riot Games acquired Hypixel Studios and the project, but canceled Hytale last June. At the end of last year, Collins-Laflamme successfully re-acquired the game, rebuilding the team to push it toward release.

Seven days ago, on January 13, 2026, Hytale entered early access after over a decade of anticipation. Reflecting on the launch, Collins-Laflamme shared his thoughts on social media, calling it "the most challenging but rewarding experience" of his life. He noted the personal risks involved: "I haven't been involved with Hytale development for many years and coming back was a big unknown and risk for me, and my family. I fully trusted the people and it just worked. Amazing team, every single one made a big difference."

Collins-Laflamme extended a "big thank you" to the community for their support and to the rebuilt Hytale team for trusting him to reach the "finish line" in just a few months. Prior to launch, Hypixel announced that Hytale had sold enough copies to fund the next two years of development. "Combined with my personal commitment of ten years," Collins-Laflamme stated, "we are looking very strong for the future."

Early reviews have been positive. Eurogamer's Matt described the release as "a splendid start; a flexible, well-featured - and already enjoyable - foundation with plenty of polish and attention to detail." For new players, guides are available, such as how to get and upgrade the Backpack in Hytale.

Hytale, the long-awaited Minecraft-inspired sandbox game, has finally entered early access on PC following a dramatic revival. After being canceled by Riot Games in 2025, Hypixel Studios reacquired the project and secured funding through pre-orders. The launch has seen strong initial success, with nearly 3 million players and top Twitch viewership.

Developer Hypixel Studios has announced that pre-purchases of its upcoming Minecraft-like game Hytale have already covered the costs for the next two years of development. The game, revived after cancellation by Riot Games, is set for early access release on January 13. Founder Simon Collins-Laflamme expects over a million players on launch day.

Hypixel Studios has released Hytale in early access on January 15, 2026, after a tumultuous development history involving cancellation by Riot Games and subsequent revival. The survival game draws heavy comparisons to Minecraft, offering similar block-based exploration and crafting but with graphical enhancements and mechanical tweaks. Players are advised to prepare for complex workbench systems and resource challenges as they dive into the procedurally generated world of Orbis.

A young developer has released a mod for Hytale that replicates Fortnite's shrinking storm, enabling battle royale modes similar to old Hunger Games setups in Minecraft. Shared on January 26 via X/Twitter, the WorldBorder mod offers customizable features for other creators. This addition highlights the game's growing modding community shortly after its early access launch.

One day after its troubled launch plagued by server issues and technical glitches, Highguard has drawn further criticism for editing out references to its developers' Apex Legends and Titanfall ties on Steam, while host Geoff Keighley denied investment rumors. Despite peak concurrent players near 100,000, 'Mostly Negative' Steam reviews persist over 3v3 format and map scales, though some praise unique mechanics.

The developers of Nested Lands have postponed the game's early access release from January 23 to February 25. This decision allows time for crucial improvements before launch. The settlement-building RPG is set in a dark, plague-ravaged world.
