Mercedes investigates Russell top speed issue at British GP

Mercedes is examining a top speed deficit that affected George Russell during qualifying for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

Team principal Toto Wolff said the squad found no obvious power unit difference after Russell qualified nearly four tenths behind teammate Kimi Antonelli. The gap appeared mainly on the Hangar Straight, where Antonelli held a roughly 6 km/h advantage.

Russell reported the same straight-line shortfall across the weekend, including in sprint qualifying. He noted that data showed losses of up to 5 km/h on straights compared with other Mercedes cars.

Wolff stated the issue was mechanical and required further investigation. The deficit eased during the race, where Russell recovered from an extra pit stop for a slow puncture to finish second behind Charles Leclerc.

Russell trails Antonelli by 25 points and said both he and the team must improve performance ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix.
