Minvu begins demolition of homes in El Olivar

The Ministry of Housing and Urbanism began demolition of homes with serious flaws in Viña del Mar’s El Olivar sector on Friday. The measure is part of the reconstruction plan after the 2024 megafire.

The Ministry of Housing and Urbanism, led by Iván Poduje, began demolition of four homes in El Olivar on Friday. The process also includes starting work on eight new homes.

Seremi Marcelo Ruiz said that “demolishing is also protecting.” He added that the overall plan involves intervening in 170 homes over three months.

The company Social Arquitectura questioned the legality of the demolitions. Its lawyer Erika Maira stated that the homes do not match the ministry’s reports and described them as “unnecessary and absolutely illegal.”

The Minvu responded that the homes have structural and safety flaws. It indicated the goal is to avoid delivering uninhabitable houses to affected families.
