Thousands visit PLA barracks in Hong Kong to celebrate city's return to Chinese rule

Thousands of Hong Kong residents visited Ngong Shuen Chau Barracks on Saturday as part of events marking the 29th anniversary of the city's return to Chinese rule. The open day featured military demonstrations and equipment displays.

The Ngong Shuen Chau Barracks on Stonecutters Island opened to the public at 9am on Saturday. Hundreds of people, including families with children, students and older residents, queued to enter.

Jennifer Shao Xia, 48, who works at Hong Kong Airlines, brought her 16-year-old son Harry Wang Haorui. She said it was her first visit to a PLA base since moving to Hong Kong in 2024.

“Our country is great. We want to visit the barracks to experience and learn more about the military and its achievements,” Shao said. She added that she came from a family with members serving in the military and planned to visit Shek Kong Barracks the following Saturday.
