Madrid previews unique banked corner at new F1 circuit

Organizers opened the under-construction Madring to select media for an early look at the 5.4km layout set to host the Spanish Grand Prix in September.

The circuit at the IFEMA fairgrounds near Barajas airport will replace Barcelona as host of the Spanish Grand Prix for a 10-year period.

A standout element is the Monumental, a 550-metre banked corner with a maximum 24% incline that forms a 270-degree arc. Carlos Sainz, the event ambassador, said drivers will enter the section at around 280km/h and described it as likely to be flat out.

The layout mixes a fast purpose-built section of 2.2km with a street-circuit style area featuring tighter corners. Grandstands will accommodate 98,000 of the expected 110,000 spectators.

Event director Luis Garcia Abad and IFEMA COO Carlos Jimenez highlighted strong public-transport links and noted that some construction and spectator adjustments will continue until race weekend.
