UCLA virologist Xia Xian joins Wuhan lab studying highly pathogenic viruses

Virologist Xia Xian, a rising star in the field, has left the US to return to his alma mater, Wuhan University, as a full-time research professor and principal investigator. He will study viruses that can cause life-threatening diseases at a key biosafety lab. His work centers on structural biology of pathogenic microorganisms using advanced microscopy techniques.

Xia Xian became a full-time research professor and principal investigator in November at Wuhan University's College of Life Sciences and the State Key Laboratory of Virology and Biosafety, known in Chinese as the National Key Laboratory of Highly Pathogenic Viruses and Biosafety. He conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) from 2018 to 2024.

Xia's research covers structural biology, virology, and pathogenic microorganisms. He has long focused on the structural and functional relationships of protein complexes associated with pathogenic microorganisms and human diseases. This involves techniques such as single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET), according to his university profile.

As a rising star scientist, Xia's move highlights China's appeal in virus research. The lab specializes in highly pathogenic viruses, potentially aiding efforts to understand and combat public health threats. Keywords from the announcement include the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), Nature Microbiology, and Cell, underscoring his academic achievements.

China's National Disease Control and Prevention Administration confirmed on Tuesday that no Nipah virus cases have been detected in the country, but following the recent outbreak in India's West Bengal, it conducted a risk assessment deeming the immediate impact low. The nation has built a robust defense system over years, including specialized guidelines since 2021.

Two weeks after detecting an african swine fever outbreak in wild boars in Cerdanyola del Vallés, Barcelona—the first in Spain since 1994—questions about its origin remain unresolved. The hypothesis of a leak from a nearby laboratory experimenting with a modified virus for vaccine development is gaining traction. Authorities urge caution as 16 positives are confirmed in the affected area.
