China completes first seabed mapping survey east of Taiwan

Mainland Chinese authorities finished a five-day maritime operation on Wednesday that included the first hydrographic survey east of Taiwan. The effort filled gaps in seabed data for the area.

The survey formed part of a coordinated operation involving China’s coastguard, local maritime safety administrations, the East Sea Navigation Support Centre and the East China Sea Rescue Bureau.

An article by the Yuyuan Tantian account linked to state broadcaster CCTV described the work as a strategic breakthrough. It said the survey allowed Beijing to exercise effective jurisdiction over waters surrounding Taiwan.

An expert noted that detailed knowledge of the waters and seabed could support more effective submarine and anti-submarine operations.

China’s maritime rescue authorities have expanded deep-sea search and rescue operations beyond 4,000 metres (13,100 feet), state media reported. The body responsible for the South China Sea completed a ‘formal transition’ after extensive deepwater training. People’s Daily credited the advance to hi-tech equipment.

Five Chinese navy ships transited the Tsushima Strait and headed northeast into the Sea of Japan, coinciding with Japan's Ground Self-Defence Force deploying new Type 25 long-range surface-to-ship guided missiles and hypervelocity gliding projectiles. Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning condemned the deployments as 'neo-militarism' and expressed serious concern.
