China's AI weather warning system Mazu expands to Global South

Seven developing countries are now using China’s AI-powered weather warning system Mazu to better prepare for natural disasters such as typhoons and rainstorms.

Pan Jinjun, chief engineer at the China Meteorological Administration, described the system as providing tailored early warning services for developing nations.

The full Mazu system has been deployed in Pakistan, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Jordan, Mongolia, the Solomon Islands and Sri Lanka, where it is integrated into daily operations. Its public cloud version has been tested by 40 Global South countries.

Named after the sea goddess Mazu, the system was designed for global use and first unveiled at last year’s World AI Conference in Shanghai.

China's National Meteorological Center has deployed a machine learning ensemble model developed by the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology for typhoon rapid intensification forecasts.

Chinese companies have released advanced AI models that rival US offerings, yet the latest ones sparked little of the earlier market panic. DeepSeek's R1 in January 2025 triggered a trillion-dollar selloff in US tech stocks, but Z.ai's GLM-5.2 last month did not. The shift reflects China's growing role in open-source AI.
