EACC arrests Nyamira County Assembly official over KSh 30 million procurement irregularities

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission arrested the Deputy Clerk of the Nyamira County Assembly on June 30 over alleged irregularities in a 2018 tender award.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission arrested the Deputy Clerk/Director of Finance and Accounts of the Nyamira County Assembly on June 30. The arrest followed investigations into the award of a tender for an office block to a company that was not the lowest bidder.

Preliminary findings showed the award resulted in an alleged unlawful financial benefit of KSh 30 million to the contractor. The case involves procurement irregularities that occurred between May and June 2018.

The inquiry file was forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions, which approved charges against the official and five other suspects. The charges include abuse of office, willful failure to comply with laws on public funds management, and negligence of official duty.

The official appeared before the Nyamira Law Courts. This arrest brings the total number of officials detained in the matter to eight, following the earlier arrest of the county clerk on June 3. The commission continues efforts to apprehend remaining suspects.
