Government deems gas supply secure

The Federal Ministry of Economics sees no threat to supply security despite low gas storage levels. Current levels stand at around 28 percent.

Economic State Secretary Frank Wetzel stated in response to a Green Party inquiry that the assessment of the supply situation does not rely solely on individual storage levels. There are no signs of a dysfunctional market.

Gas storage levels have hovered at the lower end of the multi-year average for months. Experts doubt whether the legally mandated targets of 80 percent by October 1 and 90 percent by November 1 can be met.

Federal Economics Minister Katherina Reiche is treating the issue cautiously. The background is concern that government announcements about filling the stores could drive up prices.
