Kenya Ports Authority advances Mombasa berth expansion project

The Kenya Ports Authority has started building berth 19B at the Port of Mombasa to handle rising cargo volumes.

The Kenya Ports Authority announced on Sunday that construction of berth 19B is underway at the Port of Mombasa. The new facility will add 240 metres of quay length with a 15-metre draft. It is designed to accommodate container vessels of up to about 45,000 deadweight tonnage. Once finished the berth is expected to increase annual handling capacity by 300,000 twenty-foot equivalent units. The project forms part of a wider plan to meet growing demand at East Africa’s busiest port which serves Uganda Rwanda South Sudan the Democratic Republic of Congo and northern Tanzania. KPA is also implementing its Green Ports Policy that includes shore power technology to reduce emissions from docked ships. In addition the French government has announced plans to invest over Ksh106 billion to upgrade two terminals at the port.
