A US Army veteran from North Carolina, who owns both a Tesla Cybertruck and Model Y, has shared his real-world charging expenses, revealing significant savings that convinced him to switch to electric vehicles. Despite initial skepticism, he now advocates for EVs based on the affordability of daily use. His calculations show costs far below those of gas-powered alternatives.
The veteran, featured in a recent article, detailed the charging costs for his Tesla Cybertruck, which features a 122.4 kWh battery pack. At Supercharger stations, where rates stand at 36 cents per kilowatt-hour, a full charge from zero to 100 percent amounts to about $44. He noted that this is less than half the cost of filling a typical gas-powered truck's tank.
At home, with his local electricity rate of 10 cents per kWh, the full charge drops to just over $12. For everyday driving, he typically uses about 20 percent of the battery, costing around $2.44 to replenish overnight. These figures, he said, are enough to make truck owners reconsider their fuel-dependent vehicles.
His Tesla Model Y Long Range, equipped with a 75 kWh battery, proves even more economical. A full Supercharger top-up costs roughly $27, undercutting average SUV fuel expenses. Home charging brings it down to $7.50 for a complete charge, with daily 20 percent usage at about $1.50.
Initially skeptical about electric ownership, the veteran described how the savings 'blew his mind' and made going electric a 'no-brainer.' He emphasized that home charging is fast, cheap, and convenient, proving EVs far more affordable in practice than many realize. For him, the transition to all-electric has been one of his smartest financial decisions.
