Oil prices keep falling while US stocks near record highs

Oil prices are falling on hopes for an end to the war with Iran while the US stock market holds near its records. Brent crude dropped 3.2 percent to $97.98 per barrel.

The S&P 500 added 0.2 percent to its all-time high on Wall Street. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.1 percent while the Nasdaq composite gained 0.6 percent to a fresh record.

Oil prices fell as hopes grew for reopening the Strait of Hormuz. A spokesperson for Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said, “We expect an agreement sooner rather than later.” Pakistan is mediating between the United States and Iran.

Corporate results were mixed. Datadog surged 29.6 percent, Albemarle rose 8.2 percent and Axon Enterprise gained 10.2 percent. Whirlpool dropped 12.5 percent and Shake Shack tumbled 28.6 percent.

McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski said high gasoline prices and consumer anxiety over the Iran war could hurt sales this spring.

Oil prices have fallen while Asian stock markets rose after President Donald Trump paused military strikes against Iran. The move has raised hopes for negotiations to resolve the conflict and potentially reopen energy shipping routes.

Crude oil prices have surpassed $100 per barrel amid stalled peace talks between the United States and Iran. Trade through the Strait of Hormuz remains restricted, with Iran seizing two ships and the US maintaining a naval blockade. Analysts warn of further price increases due to ongoing disruptions.

Three weeks after Iran's Strait of Hormuz blockade began, oil prices surged another 8% above $100 a barrel as US-Iran peace talks collapsed and the US Navy imposed its own blockade to curb Iranian exports. The escalation heightens global supply fears, with President Trump warning of sustained high fuel prices through November's midterm elections.

Indian equities rose more than 1 percent on Monday amid optimism over a potential peace deal between the United States and Iran. Broader Asian stocks also posted modest gains following the news. Traders reduced bearish positions as crude oil prices eased.
