Opposition demands independent inquiry into PFIPC scandal

The African Democratic Congress and Social Democratic Party called on Thursday for an independent panel to investigate the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council after President Bola Tinubu ordered a probe by the ICPC.

African Democratic Congress National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi welcomed the president’s directive to the ICPC but said only an independent panel would ensure justice is seen to be done. He argued that handing the investigation to a government agency raises doubts about its seriousness.

Abdullahi also criticised the continued detention of former governor Nasir El-Rufai, stating that President Tinubu would be held responsible for any harm to his health while in custody.

Social Democratic Party National Chairman Professor Sadiq Gombe urged Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila to resign from his positions over the PFIPC matter. He said Gbajabiamila should step aside to allow a proper independent probe.

SDP Lagos State Chairman Femi Olaniyi described the situation as disappointing and said the government has lost control.
