Ruto defends NSSF growth amid court battle over higher deductions

President William Ruto has highlighted the growth of the National Social Security Fund during a Sunday address in Embu County, even as legal disputes continue over increased contribution rates.

Speaking at a church service in Embu County on July 5, President William Ruto stated that NSSF assets have grown from KSh 312 billion when he took office in September 2022 to over KSh 680 billion. He credited the increase to reforms by his administration and leadership at the fund.

"When I became the president, NSSF had KSh 312 billion. Today it has KSh 680 billion in just three years," Ruto said.

The Employment and Labour Relations Court had ruled the enhanced deductions under the NSSF Act 2013 unlawful and ordered a return to the previous KSh 200 rate. NSSF appealed to the Court of Appeal, which declined to suspend the lower court decision.

Employers have indicated they will follow the Act while the Law Society of Kenya argues for reversion to the old rate. Under current tiers, contributions reach up to KSh 12,960 monthly for higher earners since February 2026.
