South Africa maintains strong FATF compliance under new roadmap

South Africa has recorded high compliance scores in virtual assets and public-private partnerships as the Financial Action Task Force advances its Roadmap 26-28.

The FATF launched Roadmap 26-28 on 2 July under the United Kingdom’s presidency led by Giles Thomson. The initiative sets three priorities: fraud prevention, better implementation of the risk-based approach, and improved information sharing to combat financial crime.

South Africa is currently undergoing the 5th Round Mutual Evaluation by the FATF, which began earlier this year and ends in 2027. The country received a Largely Compliant rating for virtual assets in the FATF’s July 2026 Targeted Update.

Officials noted that South Africa’s Money Laundering Integrated Task Force collaborates effectively with law enforcement. Banks are encouraged to consult public authorities before acting on flagged accounts.

These measures align with the FATF’s focus on transaction traceability, virtual asset regulation, and cross-sector information sharing.
