Chama cha Wahariri wa Kenya (KEG) kimeulaani vikali shambulio la ghasia dhidi ya waandishi wa habari wawili waliokuwa wakiripoti mkutano wa United Democratic Alliance (UDA) huko Cherangany, Kaunti ya Trans Nzoia, Ijumaa Machi 20. Rais Zubeidah Kananu aliliita kitendo hicho 'kitendo cha jeuri cha vurugu' kinachotishia uhuru wa vyombo vya habari.

Waandishi wa habari Gilbert Sitati wa Standard Group na George Njoroge wa Mediamax walishambuliwa wakati wa kutoa ripoti ya mkutano wa UDA huko Cherangany, Kaunti ya Trans Nzoia. KEG ilitoa taarifa Jumamosi Machi 21, ikilaani shambulio hilo na kusema linaathiri uhuru wa vyombo vya habari na haki ya umma kupata taarifa. Taarifa hiyo ilisema: “Chama cha Wahariri wa Kenya (KEG) kinulaani vikali shambulio la ghasia dhidi ya waandishi wa habari Gilbert Sitati wa Standard Group na George Njoroge wa Mediamax, waliopigwa wakiripoti mkutano wa United Democratic Alliance (UDA) huko Cherangany, Kaunti ya Trans Nzoia.” Ripoti za awali zinasema ugomvi ulitokana na habari iliyochapishwa katika The Standard inayomunganisha Seneta wa Trans Nzoia Allan Chesang na zabuni ya ambulensi yenye utata inayohusishwa na Harambee House. Video iliyosambaa mtandaoni inaonyesha waandishi wakikabiliwa na wanaume kadhaa, na mmoja akasema: “Msiniue. Nitaifuta rekodi. Kwa nini mnanipiga?” KEG imetoa wito kwa Inspekta Jenerali wa Polisi Douglas Kanja ashughulikie uchunguzi wa haraka na uwazi, na kuwakamata na kuwashitaki wale wanaohusika. Ikisema kutotekeleza itachukua hatua za kisheria, ikiwa ni pamoja na mashtaka ya kibinafsi. Pia, KEG imewahimiza viongozi wa kisiasa na wafuasi wao waheshimu jukumu la vyombo vya habari na kuhakikisha usalama wa waandishi katika matukio ya umma.
