Iowa nursing home fined $10,500 after patient dies without CPR

A Kingsley, Iowa, nursing home has been fined after a nurse failed to perform CPR on a patient who stopped breathing. State inspectors found the staff did not provide basic lifesaving measures. The patient later died at a hospital.

The Kingsley Specialty Care nursing home was penalized $10,500 by the Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals and Licensing. Inspectors determined the facility failed to deliver CPR to a patient experiencing breathing problems on May 9.

The patient had requested transport to a hospital. A registered nurse left the room to find oxygen equipment parts and did not return promptly. A nurse's aide performed chest compressions after confirming the patient was a full code.

Emergency medical technicians arrived ten minutes after a 911 call. They found no respiratory support equipment in the room. The nurse told inspectors she felt flustered and did not retrieve the crash cart.

The fine also addressed a separate violation involving a nurse taking a patient's medication. The patient was pronounced dead after arrival at the hospital.
