North Korea tests tactical missiles as US reaffirms ally defense

North Korea tested tactical ballistic missiles, multiple rocket launchers and cruise missiles on Tuesday under Kim Jong-un's supervision. The US Indo-Pacific Command reaffirmed its defense commitment to regional allies hours later.

The Korean Central News Agency reported Wednesday that North Korea tested a newly developed lightweight multipurpose missile launching system and multiple tactical cruise missiles. The launches took place from the Jongju area in North Phyongan Province toward the Yellow Sea.

Kim Jong-un expressed great satisfaction with the results. He noted that the tactical cruise missile, which combines terrain-mapping and AI-guided systems for precision strikes within 100 kilometers, will be deployed to long-range artillery units near the southern border.

The US Indo-Pacific Command said in a statement that it is aware of the launches and consulting closely with allies. It added that the event poses no immediate threat to US personnel or territory, and reaffirmed America's commitment to the defense of the homeland and regional allies.

North Korea fired at least one unidentified projectile eastward on Saturday, according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The launch occurred as South Korea and the United States conducted their key springtime military exercise. Pyongyang has long criticized the allies' drills as preparations for an invasion.

North Korea announced Thursday that it test-fired the Hwasong-11Ka surface-to-surface missile tipped with a cluster bomb warhead. The test confirmed the missile can "reduce to ashes" targets covering 6.5-7 hectares with the highest-density power, according to state media. The launches were part of weapons tests conducted from Monday to Wednesday.

North Korea test-fired the Hwasong-11 Ra surface-to-surface tactical ballistic missile on Sunday attended by leader Kim Jong-un to evaluate warhead capabilities, Pyongyang's state media reported Monday. South Korea's military detected the launches from the Sinpho area toward the East Sea. Seoul condemned the action as a violation of UN Security Council resolutions.

Japan's defense minister Shinjiro Koizumi said on Friday that North Korea's accelerating weapons development poses an increasingly urgent threat to national security, following Pyongyang's testing spree earlier this week.

US and Israeli strikes on Iran underscore America's stance on North Korea's nuclear program, signaling to Pyongyang that nuclear weapons may not guarantee security. Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby stated the Trump administration is 'well aware' of the issue. Experts analyze the event as making decapitation threats more real for North Korea.
