Left-wing lawyers and lawmakers announced they will file challenges Monday at the Constitutional Tribunal against the tax invariability provision in the National Reconstruction bill.
The Senate approved the bill in the early hours of Thursday and sent it to third reading in the Chamber of Deputies. The opposition decided to challenge two main points: tax invariability, which fixes taxes for up to 20 years depending on investment size, and indemnities related to environmental rulings.
A group of lawyers including Deputy Jaime Bassa and former minister Jaime Gajardo is coordinating the filings. They are considering two separate challenges, one from each chamber, mirroring a strategy used against the Protected Schools bill.
Biminister Claudio Alvarado confirmed the government is preparing its defense at the Tribunal, especially on tax invariability, and aims to avoid a joint committee in the final legislative stage.
